About the event
The Berwick Fiddle Consort (BFC) strives to approach fiddle tunes from a multi-faceted perspective, combining baroque violin technique, aurally-learned regional fiddling traditions, and study of historical manuscripts. Drawing on these sources, BFC creates period-instrument arrangements of traditional folk music that experiment with various aspects of historical performance, always bringing their own creativity to bear.
In this program, BFC explores the aural fiddle traditions of Ireland and Cape Breton, printed 18th-century Scottish folk music, and the influence of these traditions on Bach and Vivaldi. The program first focuses on the intersection of 18th-century Scottish publications and Cape Breton fiddling, a relationship that was forged through political turmoil and exodus. The second half of the concert travels to County Clare, Ireland, showcasing the unique sounds of the fiddling fondly described as having “the lonesome touch.” Throughout the musical journey, BFC also reframes canonical baroque works that draw on traditional music, placing these works within the context of their original inspiration.
Join us as we celebrate these interrelated musical traditions. Foot tapping and dancing encouraged!
